Falcons’ 45-24 Shellacking Of Saints Proves Penix Is The Real Deal

Date:

The Atlanta Falcons did not just win Monday night. They ran right over the New Orleans Saints in a 45-24 blowout that felt like a total system reset. This was a statement game for the ages, and the Falcons are officially back in business after a shaky start to the season. The Saints hoped to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Superdome reopening with a win, but they got humiliated instead. The crowd inside the dome was silent as the Falcons scored 24 points in the first half alone. According to Sports Illustrated, this marked the most points Atlanta has scored in any regular-season game since 2016.

Bijan Robinson Runs Wild

Bijan Robinson was simply untouchable on Monday night. He took the third play of the game and tore off a 59-yard touchdown run that put the Saints on their heels immediately. He finished with 145 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, and added another five through the air. According to Yahoo Sports, Robinson now matches Eric Dickerson and Emmitt Smith with 125 or more rushing yards across the longest Monday Night game streak. The Saints defense had no answer for him. They missed the assignment completely, and Robinson punished them for it. Brian Robinson Jr. also found the end zone three times, giving the Falcons five rushing touchdowns total. This is the kind of production fans have been waiting for since the team spent big on the offensive line.

Penix Finally Finds His Rhythm

Michael Penix Jr. looked like a different player under the bright lights of the Superdome. He completed 15 of 20 passes for 223 yards and a touchdown. His passer rating of 127.7 shows just how efficient he was. The offense moved the ball with ease, putting up 45 points in a game where the Saints could barely stop the run. Penix made clutch throws when the game mattered most. He connected with Jahan Dotson on a 31-yard score that sealed the deal late in the fourth quarter. After the game, Penix said, “I’m just so thankful to be able to be healthy,” per Yahoo Sports. The Falcons have become the NFL’s hottest team currently due to that health. They are now 2-0 in prime-time games this season and 10-1 on Monday Night Football since 2015.

The Saints offense looked completely lost all night. They managed only 50 rushing yards against a Falcons defense that has been underrated for too long. The Saints ran for just 23 yards with Alvin Kamara and 27 yards with the rest of the backfield combined. Even with the crowd going bananas for the Domecoming celebration, the Saints players looked flat. The coaching staff made a bad call by deferring the toss and letting the Falcons score first. That decision set a tone that New Orleans never recovered from. The Falcons are now 2-2 on the season, but this win changes everything. They are back in the playoff picture and ready to fight. The Saints need to figure out their identity fast, or this division race is going to get ugly for them very soon.
