The Atlanta Falcons didn’t just win a game on Monday night. They completely erased the memory of a legendary victory from twenty years ago. While New Orleans fans gathered to honor the “Domecoming” anniversary, the Falcons offense found a way to score on every single drive they had. It was a total demolition.
The game was supposed to be a massive celebration for the Saints. They were marking two decades since the Superdome reopened after Hurricane Katrina. The night even featured a “Who dat!” chant led by legends like Drew Brees and Scott Fujita. But the Falcons had other plans for the New Orleans crowd.
Bijan Robinson Silences the Superdome
The energy in the stadium died almost immediately. Just three plays into the night, Falcons running back Bijan Robinson ran for a 59-yard touchdown. According to The Guardian, this play silenced an electric crowd.
The Atlanta ground game was too much for the Saints to handle. Per Yahoo Sports, Bijan Robinson and Brian Robinson Jr. combined for over 200 yards on the ground and five rushing touchdowns. Brian Robinson Jr. scored three touchdowns and for 62 yards, marking their success inside the red zone. It was pure dominance.
The Saints defense couldn’t find any answers. The Falcons scored their most points since a 2016 game against Carolina. Atlanta’s defense also played great, limiting the New Orleans running attack to only 50 yards for the entire night.
Saints Struggle with Mistakes and Injuries
New Orleans had plenty of their own problems to deal with. A first-quarter fumble by Kendre Miller at the 23-yard line really hurt. Shough said “the turnover early really killed us.” That mistake allowed Atlanta to extend their lead to 14-0 right away.
The Saints’ performance lacked the magic of their 23-3 win against Atlanta twenty years ago. Saints quarterback Tyler Shough was clearly upset by the loss.
Injuries also loomed large for the Saints. Alvin Kamara scored two short rushing touchdowns, though a third-quarter knee injury forced him into the medical tent. On the final drive, Falcons receiver Chris Olave suffered a severe knee hit. The Saints ended the night with a 45-24 loss and a 1-3 record.
