Stefanski Keeps Falcons QB Race Open While Penix Waits

Date:

The Atlanta Falcons will not name a starting quarterback before the regular season starts. Head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed that the competition remains wide open despite Tua Tagovailoa’s health advantage. According to The Falcoholic, the coach stated, “We’re continuing on our process, continuing where we are.” This stance keeps hope alive for Michael Penix Jr. while forcing the veteran to play better.

The Battle for the Starter Is Real

Most teams settle this fight in July. The Falcons are dragging it into late August. Tagovailoa has been in full-team practices and played in the preseason game against the Denver Broncos. That gives him the edge. However, his performance against Denver was shaky. He looked flustered and failed to dominate the joint practices. This leaves the door cracked for Penix, who is still working his way back from injury.

Penix represents the best case scenario for the franchise. He is younger and has more theoretical upside than Tagovailoa. He is under team control for a longer period too. The only obstacle is his health. The team is still waiting for him to be ready for full-team drills. If he cannot get into game action by Week 1, the door will close. But until that moment arrives, the fight continues.

The Third Spot Is a Mess

The battle for the third quarterback role is even more chaotic. Cooper Rush and Jack Strand are fighting for that final spot. Rush played poorly in the first preseason game. He threw an interception that went for a touchdown and another pick. He did not look comfortable running the offense. Yet, he has the experience to bounce back.

Strand is an undrafted free agent from a Division II school. He scored the game’s lone touchdown on a sneak against the Broncos. He pulled off another successful sneak later in the game. He is far more advanced than a typical undrafted player. He was not impressive overall, but he had some really nice throws. The coach has not decided who starts against the Colts on Saturday.

Why This Dragging Hurts Atlanta

Delaying the decision creates anxiety for fans who remember 28-3. We do not need another quarterback who is just “good enough.” We need a clear leader. Tagovailoa is healthy enough to appear in full-team practices, which puts him in the driver’s seat. But he must steal the show in the upcoming joint practices. He has not done that yet.

Stefanski thinks the joint practices will be a chance for good work for both quarterbacks. The team needs to see who can handle the pressure. If Penix wins the job and excels, it changes the future of the franchise. If he cannot get into game action, the team will have to close that door. The hope is that Penix is nearing full clearance. That is all it is right now. Just hope.

The clock is ticking toward the game against the Colts. The coach does not know if Rush or Strand will start on Friday.
