The mental battle is just as big as the physical one. Michael Penix Jr. is officially back to full football activities. After dealing with a knee injury and reconstruction, the Atlanta Falcons quarterback is no longer sidelined from the heavy work. This is the news every fan needs to hear right now.

The news broke Monday. The quarterback is cleared for all football activities, per reports. This means the uncertainty around his ability to handle contact is finally fading. He is back in the mix for the team.

The mental hurdle for Penix

Physical clearance is one thing, but the mind has to follow. Penix has been open about the difficulty of recovering from his knee surgery. During joint practices against the Colts last week, he admitted that both he and his doctor had to consider if he could handle the hits. “If I had a rush coming at me and everything, I could get away, but it’s just right now, if I don’t get away, that’s what we think about,” Penix said.

The coaching staff is being smart about it. On Monday, the practice was not a padded session. This means the team is still being careful with contact. However, Penix is getting plenty of reps. Kevin Stefanski noted that the coach wants the quarterback in the huddle with the full unit.

The quarterback battle heats up

The depth chart is still a mess, and that is fine. While Penix gets his reps, Tua Tagovailoa is still pushing for the starting job. Tagovailoa has not yet locked down his spot. He had a rough time against the Denver Broncos. The competition includes more than just the top two. The Falcons are also watching Jack Strand and Cooper Rush. According to The Falcoholic, Stefanski stated Jack will work with the 2s and 3s. The coaching staff is focused on development for these younger players. It is a wide-open race for the top spot in Atlanta.

Looking toward the Dolphins

The preseason is almost over. The Falcons starters are set to play the Miami Dolphins to finish the preseason. We do not know the exact plan for how much the starters will play yet. We will likely hear more from the media on Wednesday. Penix has been doing a great job preparing without the full pass rush.

The team needs to find rhythm. On Monday, Penix had some off-target throws, but he also looked good connecting with Kyle Pitts over the middle. He also hit Drake London deep. The goal is to get the ball to the playmakers. If Penix can handle the pressure, the Falcons have a real fight on their hands this year.
