The Atlanta Falcons made a sharp roster cut just before the season starts. They released cornerback Darren Hall from the reserve/injured list. He was originally a fourth-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft from San Diego State. The team placed him on injured reserve at the deadline to save a spot, but now they have let him go completely. It is a clean break for a player who did not see the field much last year.
Yahoo Sports noted that the Falcons also cut running back Cash Jones, linebacker Channing Tindall, and pass rusher Azeez Ojulari. The team brought Cash Jones back to the practice squad, so he stays in town. These moves show the coaching staff wants a specific look for the opener. They are not holding onto players who might not help right now. The focus is strictly on the game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The roster is set with Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa listed as options heading into Sunday.
What Hall Brought to the Table
Darren Hall had some solid numbers in his short time with the team. He recorded 94 tackles, with 59 being solo stops, in 48 career games. Hall also had six passes defended and one sack in his time playing. He started 12 of those games, which shows he can handle the load when called upon. However, his time with Atlanta did not go as planned. In 2023, he joined the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad yet never appeared in a game. He then signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2024 before coming back to Atlanta. The Falcons decided his path lies elsewhere now. This is a tough spot for a former fourth-round pick. The team needs players who fit their immediate defensive scheme.
Focus on the First Game Only
The coaching staff has made it clear that they are not looking too far ahead. They are only thinking about the Steelers and the upcoming Sunday. Stefanski noted that he keeps his focus narrowed, viewing only Week 1 first, then moving to the subsequent game and similar matters afterward. He further stated that it is unreasonable to look beyond this specific week regarding anything concerning our football team. This mindset is exactly what the Falcons need right now. They cannot worry about the draft or the future until they win the present. The roster moves prove they are ready to roll with the players who can help today.
