Michael Penix Jr. Takes Full Practice Steps But Risks Remain

Date:

Michael Penix Jr. took part in full practice this week without wearing pads. The Falcons quarterback is medically cleared but still faces a mental test before Week 1. Head coach Kevin Stefanski wants to see him in the huddle with all eleven players before he trusts him fully in contact situations.

The Practice Reality Check

Penix got a lot of work while backups Cooper Rush and Jack Strand saw limited action. According to The Falcoholic, Stefanski noted the starters needed more reps after the backups played so much against the Colts on Saturday. “I think bigger picture for me at least right this minute is getting [Penix] in the huddle with all 11,” the coach stated to clarify his top priority. This quote shows the team is focused on mental reps, not just physical ones.

Both Penix and Tua Tagovailoa threw some balls that were off target, often sailing them high. One deep pass to Drake London went out of bounds, but Penix did hit him deep on another play that was slightly off. The connection over the middle with Kyle Pitts looked comfortable, which is a good sign for the offense.

The Mental Hurdle Is Real

Getting healthy is one thing, but believing you can take a hit is another. During joint practices versus the Colts last week, Penix discussed his fear of re-injury. He told the media that while he feels fine, the risk of not getting away from a rush is what keeps him up at night. “If I had a rush coming at me and everything, I could get away, but it’s just right now, if I don’t get away, that’s what we think about,” Penix said. This admission proves the mental block is still there.

Stefanski says there are ways to prepare without taking the full risk of contact. He believes Penix has done a fantastic job with those methods so far. The team will play the Miami Dolphins this week to close out the preseason, but no set plan exists for starter workloads yet. Fans will likely get more details on Wednesday when the coach speaks to the media again. The Falcons need a quarterback who can play without flinching, and that is the biggest question mark right now.

The depth chart situation remains tight with four quarterbacks on the roster. Tua Tagovailoa intends to demonstrate that he deserves the starting role no matter what Penix’s status is. Reports from The Falcoholic indicate that Jack Strand has been thrilling to observe this preseason and holds massive potential. The coaching staff is being intentional about how they bring Strand along, noting that player development is a huge part of their job. With both Penix and Tua having injury histories, having a solid QB3 is fundamentally important for the team.

Penix looks ready to work, but the final decision depends on his comfort level with full contact. The team will not force him into a situation that risks his long-term health. If he cannot clear the mental hurdle, the Falcons have options on the bench. The road to Week 1 is getting clearer, but the finish line is still far away.
